Hi Tom, You have 1 item backwards, Indirect injection diesels are much harder cold starting...not easier. The fuel economy is 10 - 20% better on a direct injection engine. I believe most all farm tractors I've ever seen are direct injection. If you notice, all the Kubota's, New Holland's, Massey Ferguson, Long, & Kioti compact tractors are indirect and all the Kubota/NH/MF larger utility class and farm/ag size are direct injection. John Deere across the board currently has all direct injection {except 4100}, and this includes Yanmar and JD Powertech engines. The only "thermostart" heater(12v. heater coil) reference{I've seen} is used in the air intake system to preheat the incoming air for helping under 32 degree starts. Maybe they have used the term "thermostart" for something else as Roger has suggested.

Basically, it's increasing fuel delivery/rate to the injectors. By changing/adjusting the injection pump you go from say 38 PTO hp rated to 45 PTO hp... But, increased engine hp gets increased heat that must get dissipated somehow.. Look for an added oil cooler, trans cooler, larger water pump, larger radiator, etc. {or a combo of these things}

Jim, Think for a moment...With all the dealer resources, if it could be economically repaired, don't you think he would do it? It certainly would be worth more working... there must be a very good reason why it's still in that state, especially on a "tractor dealer's lot". I agree with Bird...forget it.

I had looked at them about 10 years ago{thinking of upgrades} and I believe they were air-cooled engines...However, I didn't upgrade{at that time} and didn't buy one, but since then, I've talked to different people that own them and the worst thing they say is the parts replacement costs from AGCO. Everyone across the board told me some outrageous prices for parts, right down to the basics of even filters. Other than that, everyone seemed very happy with their unit.

My friend had considered a 1250 for mowing his 10+ acre estate lawn. After considering other "things" he was going to be using the tractor for... I got him into a MF1165. He has the Massey loader{not mounted when mowing}, loaded Galaxy turfs with windshield washer fluid, and pulls a 12' Bat-wing mower to do his lawn... So I don't know how many more thousands of pounds that is over the 1240, but It's working out Great for him!

I've seen posts with prices from $170-250. for the new JD lift arms. I have a JD5205 and the range is about ~~4"...never measured. You just need a slight range anyways{to cut down on the fiddling of hookup!}...I have the Quick-Hitch mounted to my Satoh{if telescopic arms were avail...I'd have them instead} Lastly, but not least, I have telescoping arms on my MF165, of which design and use I like the best. First, I wouldn't randomly "pull a figure out of thin air"...I agree with Mark and Ken, calculate exactly what does the tractor and implements cost YOU. If the guy down the road is doing it for $7.50 Hr and you have to just undercut him to get the business & charge $5.hr....then you find out it's costing YOU say $35. Hr... Well guess what...You just lost $30.hr! X so many hours {Sounds like the way some Dot.Com's are being run-another subject} After you know exactly what it costs, then figure in a fair profit and charge accordingly. Also consider what the local "Rental Agency" gets per day to rent the tractor, to rent the implement, to bring them to the job site, to pick them up.,cost of fuel, cost of operator etc. etc. Check local competition rates...Bottom line, there is "no magic formula"...but you should as least know what it COSTS YOU and go from there...

Rule of thumb... you'll need 15 - 20 DRAWBAR H.P. {Not PTO or Gross Engine HP} per moldboard plow and of course proper tractor ballast.

BushHog & Great Bend {BushHog owned co.} are excellent aftermarket loaders. For the difference of a few hundred dollars more, I would stick with the mfr {JD} loader. Even now, most aftermarket units are "quick-detach". Normally, you go to an aftermarket loader when the mfr. loader is not available, was never mfr., or no longer available. Loader capacities will remain very close no matter who made the unit. Like Jim said earlier, to prevent any future/present compatibility issues, stay with the mfr. branded loader.

I find it hard to believe... "two" defective batteries? Is it possible, the charging system is "borderline" and slightly overcharging... I guess you'll soon find out with your new "sealed" $130. battery, if the sides start bulging out, the generated gas has to go somewhere...

This is what I would do... (approx. price???) 11.2 X 24 Rears R1 $165. ea., 10 X 24 Stamped metal wheel $150. ea., mounting about $35. ea. and load with calcium choride water mix $40. ea.. Leave the front R4's on as is and try it this way first. I don't think your 4WD ratio will change that much with the R4's on the front and R1 profiles on the rear. It may look a little funny, but we're not going after a beauty contest here. It's a shame you got the R4's... the dealer should have recommended the R1's in your terrain and for what you do. You can go to WWW.MILLERTIRE.COM to better check out tire pricing. Or see if you can swing a deal with a local JD dealer against a trade in. Swap your industrials for his ag's, pay him the labor and some extra to make it worth his while...Good luck!

Hum...Beckman meter huh? You have good taste! Now we use Fluke though... Anyhow, how old is the battery? Just maybe the life of the party oops I mean battery is going downhill. I saw Roger's post on his battery for over 10 years in one of his tractors, like my Isuzu P'up battery about 10 or 11 years. Severe drain in the cold, but could start fine on warm days. I'd just put another battery in. Yes 1.2 mil is not abnormal... Take the battery off, charge it fully, measure it, let it sit in the shed for 60 days, measure it again, Less or perhaps dead? Remember the battery has internal leakage, electrolyte weak/old, plates warped, causing those "tiny" internal shorts within, etc. etc.
Good luck with the new battery. (Take a piece of tape and write the date on the battery when installed for the future)

Hello Jeff. If Hillbilly has a JD4400, I believe there is only about .8" - 2" clearance. Mounting chains on the front tires would hit the frame. This is a compact tractor here, not some large ag tractor with a foot of clearance. I have a slightly larger unit JD5205 and I can't put my finger between the tire and frame. There is absolutely no room.

Hi Randy. That's with 4wd & SCV's. I don't know about the mid-pto or block heater though. I'm in Upstate New York (little cold in winter) and most of this dealer's tractors have block heaters, and he delivers up to 50 mile radius with purchase. I guess the secret to selling is give the razor away so you can sell the blades. He said 99% of the compacts are sold with implements. Kinda hard to do any kind of work without them...
